September 11th, 2001 - September 11th, 2011

Today was sad. Today was a day to remember. But today was also joyful. I remember being 15 years old and while putting on my makeup for the day, my sister and I heard the alert on the radio. We rushed to the tv and sat in the living room awestruck at the devastation and death. My parents were in Florida and I just remember being so frightened and in the days that followed, how incredibly odd it was that there were no planes flying in the sky. Our television was a 24/7 feed of live news and I slept in the living room up all night to watch as much as I could take in. That day was terrible but I felt proud to be an American.
This is what Ground Zero will look like...how about that?
Today, 10 years later we remember those who lost their lives. Those who dedicated their lives and put others safety before their own. The first responders, the reporters and the military who still to this day watch our borders and patrol our skies for any threat of terrorism. This is why it is a joyful day. Those men tried to strip us of our dignity. They sought to unravel the thread that makes America a beautiful, free country. AND THEY DID NOT SUCCEED. With a heavy heart I watched all of the people on my tv screen crying as the lovingly touched the carved names of their loved ones at ground zero as Paul Simon sang a somber "Sound of Silence." At that moment I was the proudest I've ever been  of the USA. They tried to kill our spirit, so we rose up and made the sight of that horrible day an eternal monument to all of the people who they so eagerly took from us. We will never forget what happened that day, we will never be the same and we will forever be stronger than we were before September 11th, 2001. And that is why today was awesome.
